✈️ What 20 Years in Aviation Taught Me About Airport Transfers

Most people booking an airport transfer want the same thing:
A calm, reliable and stress-free journey.
What many people don't realise is that before launching Devon Transfers Private Hire, I spent 20 years working in the aviation industry — in roles where planning ahead, monitoring changing situations and keeping operations running smoothly were part of everyday life.
That experience now shapes how I plan and deliver airport transfers across Mid Devon today, and it's one of the reasons I specialise in Exeter and Bristol Airport journeys.
🛫 From Bristol Airport to Airline Operations
My aviation career began at Bristol Airport, where I worked in a variety of operational roles and developed a genuine interest in how airports and airlines work behind the scenes.
I loved being close to aircraft and understanding what happened behind the scenes. That curiosity led me into several different areas of aviation and helped build a broad understanding of how airports and airlines operate.

Later, I joined Flybe shortly after the integration of BA Connect — a busy and exciting period for the airline.
During some of Flybe's busiest summer seasons, the airline operated more than 550 flights a day across the UK and Europe.
I worked within Flybe's Operations Control Centre (OCC), the part of the airline responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation and helping keep flights running safely and efficiently.
The OCC brought together several specialist teams including:
✔ Operations Control
✔ Crew Control
✔ Aircraft Maintenance Control (Maintrol)
✔ Customer Liaison Team
✔ Aircraft Spares and Logistics
✔ Other operational support functions
Working alongside these teams provided a unique view of how many different departments work together to keep an airline operating successfully.

It also reinforced the importance of communication, preparation and contingency planning when things don't go exactly as expected.
It was a fast-paced environment where plans could change quickly and decisions often had to be made with incomplete information.
Weather changed.
Aircraft arrived late.
Air traffic restrictions appeared.
Technical issues occurred.
Passengers needed information.
Crews required repositioning.
The key lesson was simple:
Very few journeys ever run perfectly to plan. Success comes from preparing well, monitoring what is happening and adapting when circumstances change.
🛬 Understanding What Happens Behind the Scenes
Later in my aviation career, I moved into Flight Navigation and Air Traffic Management, specialising in route planning and air traffic operations.
Many people assume aircraft simply fly directly from one airport to another.
In reality, they often follow a network of established routes known as airways — effectively motorways in the sky.

Aircraft routing is influenced by factors such as:
✔ Air traffic levels
✔ Weather systems
✔ Airspace restrictions
✔ Military activity
✔ Operational efficiency
Understanding how flights are planned, monitored and adjusted gave me a much deeper appreciation for how airports, airlines and air traffic systems work together.
It also reinforced the importance of planning ahead, monitoring changing situations and having alternatives ready when circumstances change — skills I still use today when planning airport transfers for customers.
🧭 How This Helps My Airport Transfer Customers Today
Although I'm no longer working within the airline industry, the mindset never really leaves you.
While my role today is very different, I still find myself regularly monitoring flights and airport activity as part of planning airport transfers for customers.
When I'm planning an airport transfer, I'm not simply looking at the drive.
I'm looking at the whole journey.
Before many airport transfers, I'm already checking:
✔ Flight schedules and live updates
✔ Airport operational information
✔ Weather forecasts
✔ Planned roadworks and motorway closures
✔ Traffic conditions
✔ Alternative route options

Most customers simply see a pickup time and a vehicle arriving at their door.
What they don't see is the planning happening beforehand to help ensure everything runs smoothly.
I use several tools and apps throughout the day to monitor flights, traffic and travel conditions, helping me identify potential issues early and make adjustments where needed.
🧳 Why Airport Transfers Are Different
Airport transfers are often very different from a standard taxi journey.
A holiday flight might depart before sunrise.
A delayed arrival could affect collection times.
Roadworks on the M5 may require alternative routing.
Families may be travelling with luggage, pushchairs or tired children.
Business travellers may have tight schedules to keep.
When timing matters, preparation matters too.
My aviation background means I'm naturally used to thinking ahead, monitoring changing situations and planning alternatives before problems arise.
🛠️ What This Looks Like in Practice
The aviation mindset often shows itself in small ways that customers never see.
That might mean:
✔ Monitoring overnight motorway closures before an early-morning airport run
✔ Keeping an eye on weather conditions before a departure
✔ Tracking inbound flights before heading to the airport
✔ Adjusting planned routes when traffic conditions change
✔ Updating customers when delays affect arrival times
These are often small details, but they can make a significant difference to how smoothly a journey runs.
🚐 A Calm, Reliable Journey
My goal is simple:
You arrive at the airport on time.
You get home smoothly after your flight.
And you don't have to worry about what's happening behind the scenes.
Whether you're travelling to Exeter Airport, Bristol Airport or returning home after a flight, every airport transfer is planned with the same attention to detail I've used throughout my aviation career.
Because when timing matters, the journey to the airport matters just as much as the flight itself.
If you're planning an upcoming flight and would like a fixed-price quotation, I'd be happy to help.
