Whether you're in the mood for a quick espresso, a leisurely brunch or an indulgent slice of cake, Mid Devon is brimming with fantastic local cafés. As a private hire taxi driver, I’m often on the move and finding great places to stop and recharge has become a bit of a personal mission.
Ask anyone who knows me: I really enjoy a good coffee, especially one that’s full of flavour. Over time, I’ve discovered a few standout spots worth sharing. These are my top picks for a cosy coffee break in Mid Devon—each one with its own charm and story.

The Bakehouse, Cullompton – A Personal Favourite
If there's one place my wife and I return to time and time again, it's The Bakehouse in Cullompton. Whether you're after a morning coffee, a hearty breakfast or even an evening meal, this café ticks every box. The food is consistently excellent, the service always welcoming and the setting? Incredibly inviting.
Here’s how the team at The Bakehouse describe it:
"The Bakehouse welcomes you into a beautiful setting where old world and original features meet with a modern industrial twist.
Run by Chris and Miranda Marklew together with their talented chefs and a friendly team, you’ll have the pleasure of perusing our creative specials board with breakfasts, lunches and gorgeous platters which complement our menu featuring your old favourites with a spin.
Our dishes are freshly prepared by our kitchen and use locally sourced products wherever possible, to help support our local community and produce very tasty food… and you have to try our mouthwatering home made cakes!
So whether its just for a latte and a slice of cake or you’d like to stay and enjoy a daily special with a glass of wine, come and soak up the history surrounding you and listen to the perfect accompanying music… and the noisy kitchen."

The Steamer Coffee House and Kitchen
Just a short drive from our base in Willand, along the B3181, is The Steamer Coffee House and Kitchen—a multi award-winning gem that’s much more than just a café.
Here’s what the team shared about their story:
"The Steamer Coffee House & Kitchen is a multi award winning cafe-restaurant in Mid-Devon that started off as an idea more than 3 years ago. We have tried and tasted the best food and drink from all over the region and put them all under one roof - sourcing food from well known Devon growers, makers and suppliers, learning about their heritage and love that goes into their products.
We have plenty of free parking, a log burner, comfy sofas, kids indoor and outdoor play areas, a local produce shop, free WiFi and a quiet room with work pods. We've worked hard to create a comfortable, homely space where people can come together to enjoy great coffee and locally sourced foods. The friendly and welcoming team at The Steamer are at the very centre of the first class, homely experience we aim to provide to every single customer."
It’s the kind of place you can spend an hour—or an entire morning.

The Strand Stores, Culmstock
Located in the beautiful village of Culmstock, The Strand Stores is a true hidden gem.
Once a general store, it's been lovingly transformed into a charming café that retains its vintage character.
I’ve only stopped in for coffee, but I’ve heard many others speak highly of their food—especially the homemade scones and light bites. It’s the kind of place where time slows down. Whether you're sipping a fresh pot of tea or admiring the unique decor, The Strand invites you to stay a little longer than planned.
Elsie Mays, Tiverton
Elsie Mays in Tiverton stands out with its vibrant decor and upbeat vibe. It’s a great spot whether you’re grabbing coffee, catching up with friends or just enjoying a moment to yourself.
The staff are incredibly friendly and quick to offer a recommendation. The coffee is excellent and their cooked breakfast is delicious.
Elsie Mays also plays an active role in the local community, often hosting events and get-togethers. It’s a bright, welcoming place that always lifts your mood.

The Flying Pickle, Tiverton
Rounding off the list is The Flying Pickle, another Tiverton favourite with a strong focus on sustainability and locally sourced ingredients.
The café’s eco-friendly vibe is matched by a thoughtful menu that changes with the seasons. From freshly baked bread to their popular seasonal quiche, there’s a lot to love here. Their coffee, brewed from ethically sourced beans, is rich and full of depth.
It’s also a great place to strike up a conversation—you’ll often find yourself chatting with someone at the next table who’s just as passionate about good food and great coffee.
☕ Your Next Coffee Break Awaits
Each of these cafés offers more than just a great cup of coffee—they provide a warm welcome, a connection to the community and a reason to slow down and enjoy your surroundings.
So whether you’re local to Mid Devon or just passing through, I hope you’ll take the time to visit one (or all!) of these fantastic spots. Grab a seat, enjoy a brew and savour the best of what our local café scene has to offer.
And if you’ve got a favourite café I haven’t mentioned—let me know! I’m always on the lookout for my next great coffee stop.
