Flying from Exeter Airport? A Mid Devon Traveller’s Guide to Getting There, When to Leave & What to Expect
Living in Mid Devon, we're fortunate to have an airport like Exeter relatively close to home.
For travellers from Willand, Cullompton, Uffculme, Tiverton and the surrounding villages, flying from Exeter can mean a much shorter journey than travelling to one of the larger regional airports.
But there's one question I regularly get when arranging Exeter Airport transfers:
“What time should we leave home?”
The answer isn't always as simple as working backwards from your flight time.
In fact, if you've booked one of Exeter's first flights of the morning, arriving too early may not actually help.
Having spent 20 years working in aviation before starting Devon Transfers Private Hire and now regularly taking passengers between Mid Devon and Exeter Airport, I've put together some practical advice to help you plan the start of your journey.
✈️ Early flight from Exeter Airport? Don't automatically assume that getting to the airport as early as possible is better. The landside terminal is generally open overnight, but you can't pass through security until check-in for the day's flights begins. For some of Exeter's first departures, I've regularly seen check-in open at around 4am. So arriving at 3am for a flight whose check-in doesn't open until 4am could simply mean an extra hour waiting landside. Always check the published information for your particular flight, as check-in times can vary.
How early should I arrive at Exeter Airport?
The first thing to check is the guidance provided by your airline or holiday company.
Check-in requirements can vary depending on the flight, airline and type of holiday you've booked.
Exeter Airport advises passengers to follow their individual airline's check-in requirements. For charter holiday flights, check-in desks generally open around 2½ hours before departure and close around 60 minutes before the flight.
You'll also need enough time to check in any hold luggage, pass through security and be ready for boarding.
One of Exeter Airport's advantages is its relatively compact terminal. You're not dealing with some of the distances involved at much larger airports.
However, that doesn't mean it's worth cutting things too fine.
Busy check-in desks, security queues and particularly busy departure periods can all add time.
The aim should be to arrive comfortably early — not unnecessarily early.
Got a 6am flight? Earlier isn't always better
This is one of the things that can surprise people who haven't flown from Exeter before.
Imagine you've booked a 6am holiday flight.
It's natural to think:
“It's an early flight, so let's get there really early just to be safe.”
At a major airport operating at full pace throughout the night, that might seem sensible.
Exeter is different.
Although the landside terminal is generally accessible overnight, passengers can't simply arrive several hours early and immediately head through security.
Security becomes available when check-in for the day's flights begins, with airport facilities also beginning to open around that time.
For some of the first departures of the day, I've regularly found check-in opening at around 4am.
That means getting there at 3am doesn't necessarily give you an additional hour to get checked in and through security.
It may simply give you an additional hour waiting for check-in to open.
That's something I take into account when helping passengers plan early-morning Exeter Airport transfers.
Rather than simply looking at the departure time and saying “we need to leave as early as possible”, I look at the flight, likely check-in time, pickup location and the journey to the airport.
The goal isn't to get you to Exeter Airport ridiculously early. It's to get you there at a sensible time, with enough contingency for a comfortable start to your journey.
Of course, individual flights can differ, so always check the latest information from your airline and Exeter Airport before travelling.
What time should I leave Mid Devon for Exeter Airport?
There isn't one pickup time that works for everybody.
Where you live matters, but so does when you're travelling.
A journey towards Exeter Airport at 4am can be very different from exactly the same journey during the morning commute or on a busy Friday afternoon.
When I'm planning an airport transfer, I therefore consider:
your scheduled flight time
when check-in is expected to open
where I'm collecting you from
the time and day of travel
likely traffic conditions
and an appropriate amount of contingency
It's a much better approach than simply taking the current Google Maps journey time and working backwards.
Willand to Exeter Airport
Willand is particularly well placed for Exeter Airport.
With relatively straightforward access towards Exeter, it's one of the reasons the airport can be such a convenient option for people living locally.
For a very early departure, the roads are usually considerably quieter than they would be during the working day.
At busier times, however, traffic on the M5 and around Exeter can make the journey less predictable.
That's why I wouldn't necessarily recommend exactly the same amount of travelling time for a 6am flight as I would for an afternoon departure.
Cullompton to Exeter Airport
Cullompton is similarly well placed, with good access towards Exeter and the airport.
Again, the time of day can make a significant difference.
For those first flights of the morning, traffic is generally very light. Later in the day, particularly around busy commuting periods, allowing additional time can be sensible.
Rather than using one fixed calculation for every journey, I prefer to work backwards from the individual flight and consider when passengers realistically need to be at the terminal.
Uffculme to Exeter Airport
Exeter Airport is also a convenient option from Uffculme, although naturally a little more time needs to be allowed for reaching the main route towards Exeter.
For families and groups in particular, a pre-arranged pickup from home can make an early departure considerably easier.
Suitcases are loaded at home and you travel directly to the terminal, without needing to drive, find airport parking or transfer luggage between different forms of transport.
At 3am or 4am, when everybody would probably rather still be asleep, keeping things straightforward can make a real difference!
Tiverton to Exeter Airport
For passengers travelling from Tiverton, Exeter Airport can still be a very practical alternative to travelling further afield.
Journey times naturally vary depending on where in Tiverton you're starting, as well as the time and day you're travelling.
An early-morning journey can be considerably quieter than travelling towards Exeter during the working day.
If you're booking a transfer and aren't sure what pickup time to request, you don't need to work it all out yourself.

Is an early-morning journey actually more predictable?
Quite often, yes.
It sounds strange, but a 3am or 4am airport pickup can sometimes involve a more predictable road journey than one later in the day.
There are generally far fewer vehicles on the road and none of the usual commuter or school-run traffic.
During weekday mornings, Friday afternoons, holiday periods and other busy times, there's naturally more potential for delays.
That's another reason why airport transfer planning shouldn't simply be:
Flight time – Google Maps journey time = pickup time.
The time of day matters too.
Travelling to Exeter Airport with children?
An airport morning can feel very different when you're travelling as a family.
There are children to get ready, luggage to organise and often child seats to think about before you've even left home.

What happens if my return flight is delayed?
Getting you to the airport is only half of the journey. I also keep a close eye on your return flight — and that often starts long before you're due to land back at Exeter.

Bristol Airport offers a much wider range of flights and destinations and can absolutely be the better choice for some trips.
But Exeter has one enormous advantage for those of us in Mid Devon:
it's close to home.
For travellers in Willand, Cullompton, Uffculme, Tiverton and surrounding villages, that can mean considerably less time on the road at both ends of the holiday.
And while you certainly notice the difference on the outbound journey, I think you notice it even more when you come home.
After a flight back from holiday, collecting your luggage and walking out of the terminal, knowing you haven't then got a long journey home can be very welcome.
The airport's relatively compact size is another reason many passengers enjoy using it.

So, what time should you leave for Exeter Airport?
There's no single answer.
And that's really the point.
A sensible pickup time depends on your flight, where you live, when you're travelling and what time check-in actually begins.
The best airport journey isn't necessarily the one where you arrive earliest.
It's the one that's properly planned.
Before travelling, think about:
your flight departure time
your airline's check-in requirements
when check-in actually opens
your pickup location
the time of day
likely road conditions
your passengers and luggage
and enough contingency to avoid unnecessary stress
For Exeter's early flights in particular, arriving extremely early can sometimes mean nothing more than waiting for the airport operation to get underway.
A little planning — and a little local knowledge — can make the start of your holiday much easier.
